Horses in Watercolour – A live ONLINE demonstration with William Rogers, CSPWC
William Rogers’ equine paintings are rooted in his lifelong familiarity with the subject. His experience as a horseman in general as well as racing horses for over 20 years has given him a deep respect and affection for these great creatures.
Bill will begin his demonstration by showing reference photos and discussing how he pulls from more than one reference when creating a painting. Horses have uniquely recognizable and distinctive figures so Bill will discuss drawing tips on how to make a horse that looks right. He will share how he places the horse figure within the composition and how he solves the puzzle of making a convincing background.
While Bill paints he will discuss his colour selection and demonstrate how he mixes those colours to create a feeling of volume and form. He will demonstrate how he uses his brushstrokes to achieve a realistic and also painterly depiction of this classic subject.
Bill says this about his choice of subject for this demonstration:
“Many of my paintings of horses are related to racing, both harness and thoroughbred, as well as riding in general. Some are related to horse handlers and their activity with horses. This workshop will deal with the horse in pasture under sunlit conditions. Sunlight helps define the form of the horse, which makes it stand out from its environment.”

About William Rogers, CSPWC, TWSA, WPA, NWS
Painting the figure from life is a regular discipline for Bill. He runs a live weekly figure drawing/painting open session at St Francis Xavier University. This has been been a mainstay of his painting practice for the last 20 years. These figures in watercolor, oil and pastel make up a significant part of his exhibitions and gallery consignments. For example, one such figure was juried into the Oil Painters of America (OPA) National Exhibition for 2020 at RS Hanna Gallery in Fredericksburg TX. Most recently an oil figure “A Little Bit Shy” was juried into the OPA’s 2020 Eastern Regional Exhibition at Reinert Gallery in Charleston SC where it won an award of excellence.
In May 2014, Bill served as the Royal Tour Artist for the 2014 Royal Tour of Canada by HRH Prince Charles and HRH Duchess of Cornwall. It was the experience of a lifetime. A number of the works completed from the tour are now in Prince Charles’ Personal Royal Collection.
Bill is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS) where he received the Di Di Deglin Award for his figure “In Thought” in the 2019 AWS 152nd International Exhibition. Additionally, he is a member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA). He is an Elected Member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) of which he is a Past President from 2012-2014. In addition he is also a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA).
