Painting Intuitively in Watercolour – A live ONLINE demonstration with Donna Acheson Juillet, CSPWC

Many artists are eager to dive headfirst into the world of loose and “painterly” techniques, and guess what? You’re in for an exciting ride! There’s a secret to achieving that coveted level of artistry – it’s all about running with your intuition, allowing the paint to flow and work its magic alongside you.

Sure, it might sound a little intimidating, especially when you’re dealing with the unpredictable nature of watercolours. But fear not! In this inspiring demonstration, you’ll be equipped with the skills to plan ahead strategically, unleashing the potential for a luminous initial layer that serves as the foundation for your artistic masterpiece. Imagine crafting a painting that’s as unique as your own vision of the world! Donna will be your guide on this exciting journey, demonstrating how to think about positive and negative space, and balance soft and hard edges to create a one-of-a-kind composition. Get ready to embark on a memorable artistic adventure!

You will have the chance to practice these skills as you work through the demonstration (we recommend you watch the demo as it occurs and then paint along with the recording)

  • Plan the painting ahead in order to loosen up and paint intuitively,
  • Create an interesting and balanced composition
  • Paint positive and negative forms
  • Paint a bird on a fluid, original background
  • Create a well-balanced composition that reflects your vision of the world!

About Donna Acheson Juillet, CSPWC, SFA

Art teacher in a classroom

Donna describes how she fell in love with watercolours at an early age: “My mom proudly stuck the onion she had just painted in her watercolour class on the edge of the mirror in the kitchen. The delicate blending of colours, subtle differences in value, alluring negative work and glimmering transparency fascinated me. I have been painting ever since.

I love to take risks, to provoke those accidents that this wonderful medium has to offer. However, I do not leave everything to chance and plan my compositions, looking for balance through the use of value and colour.

“I enjoy mixing the figurative with the abstract, often suggesting still life shapes, nature or animals, inviting the spectator to finish the story that I started. I prefer to work from my imagination, interpreting nature, drawing from my memories and sensations of past experiences. I am interested in art that shows the artist’s vision of the world as they see it.”

“For me, painting with watercolours is a never-ending adventure and a never-ending love affair!”
