Workshop Description

William Rogers, CSPWC, is known for his exquisite figure paintings which are most often done from life.

In this three-session workshop, Bill will share how to plan the figure composition with an emphasis on drawing, values, and colour. In addition, simplification and the order of painting will be key components. Washes, wet in wet, and drybrush in relation to figure painting will all be covered.

Bill will explain his process and considerations as he paints. There will be opportunities for questions as the workshop progresses. In order to maximize instructional time, during the live sessions Bill will critique a few selected student works that represent common learning issues. In addition, he will provide a written critique for each student of ONE of their works done during the three-day workshop. He will send that critique by email to the student.

Participants will be encouraged to post their homework in the CSPWC Workshop Facebook Group for feedback and interaction with our workshop community.

This workshop will be most useful for intermediate to advanced watercolour painters. Painters with less experience may find it proceeds quickly. To help all participants, recordings of the classes will be available for 2 weeks.

Workshop Schedule

Day One: Closeup Portrait Demo followed by Paint along

Day Two: Figure Painting Demo followed by Paint along + Homework Assignment given. Critique of First Day’s work

Day Three: More Advanced Composition Paint Along as well as a Critique of Homework Piece

About William Rogers

Painting the figure from life is a regular discipline for Bill.  He runs a live weekly figure drawing/painting open session at St Francis Xavier University. This has been been a mainstay of his painting practice for the last 20 years.  These figures in watercolor, oil and pastel make up a significant part of his exhibitions and gallery consignments. For example, one such figure was juried into the Oil Painters of America (OPA) National Exhibition for 2020 at RS Hanna Gallery in Fredericksburg TX. Most recently an oil figure “A Little Bit Shy” was juried into the OPA’s 2020 Eastern Regional Exhibition at Reinert Gallery in Charleston SC where it won an award of excellence.

In May 2014, Bill served as the Royal Tour Artist for the 2014 Royal Tour of Canada by HRH Prince Charles and HRH Duchess of Cornwall. It was the experience of a lifetime. A number of the works completed from the tour are now in Prince Charles’ Personal Royal Collection.

Bill is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society (AWS) where he received the Di Di Deglin Award for his figure “In Thought” in the 2019 AWS 152nd International Exhibition. Additionally, he is a member of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America (TWSA). He is an Elected Member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour (CSPWC) of which he is a Past President from 2012-2014. In addition he is also a signature member of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA).
