Be inspired by this demonstration of an exciting approach to painting flowers by Sterling Edwards, CSPWC, just in time for summer. Sterling will share his unique and expressive style of painting which reveals the joyous energy springing forth when flowers burst into bloom. Learn how he designs his paintings to have movement, expressive colors, strong shifts of values in selected places to create drama and overlapping positive and negative shapes to suggest depth and dimension.
Sterling describes his demonstration:
“The painting will be a loose and semi-abstracted watercolor floral with an emphasis on creating overlapping negative shapes. My goal is to create a painting that is colorful, expressive, and different than the typical floral painting. So, I do not intend to do a portrait of a flower but rather an expressive semi-abstract painting in which you will see enough botanical elements to interpret that the piece is a floral but with a minimum of actual detail.
This style of painting is what I often call my signature style and can be a means of painting just about everything. It’s a step outside of the box.”
Are you wondering “What is a stylized painting?”
Put simply it is a painting of something that is easily recognizable but has an abstract element. Unlike abstract expressionism, which is non-objective art, a stylized painting is both an abstract and a representational painting combined into one piece of art.
In other words “It’s an abstract painting that I can hang my hat on”.
Sterling Edwards is world renowned for his expressive and thought provoking stylized watercolor paintings. He often refers to his stylized pieces as his signature style of painting because it allows him the freedom to create something that is unique and interpretive that bridges the gap between those who like more traditional design and those who want something more contemplative with a slight abstraction. Each painting is a somewhat spontaneous venture that is designed to entertain the viewers imagination and show them something that they would never see without being shown by the artist.
Let this demonstration help you get into the flow of expressive watercolour painting and put some pizzazz in your work.
